Interdisciplinary research excursion to the North Sea island Juist 2019

In the winter semester 2018/19 the SRH- students "International Tourism & Event Management" realized a scientific teaching research project. The goal - the climate island Juist.

In the winter semester 2018/19, the SRH- students "International Tourism & Event Management" of the 5th semester from Dresden implemented a scientific teaching research project in cooperation with the tourism consulting company Futour and a selected destination. This year Juist was examined as a so-called "climate island". The professional input was given by Prof. Dr. Ines Carstensen (Professor SRH University of Applied Sciences Berlin and Dresden, focus tourism) and Dr. Peter Zimmer (Diplom. Betriebswirt, Managing Director cooperation partner Futour).

In a 5-day excursion, the students explored the extent to which Juist is a climate island, what the population, tourists, and tourism service providers think about it and what measures have already been taken to justify this designation. The island of Juist was chosen for this purpose for several reasons.

Superficially, Juist, like many other North Sea islands, is a booming summer destination. Since the island has been advertising with the title "climate island" for several years, it should be investigated what constitutes a climate island. To get a good insight, they explored the island and invited residents, entrepreneurs, and tourists to a workshop, in which the current problems were to be solved with the most creative ideas possible.

The Innovation and Sustainability Management module to be taken by the students provided a good framework for this educational research. The students' results will be summarized in a teaching SRH workshop report. The impulses from the teaching research seminar will be used by Prof. Dr. Carstensen for further research activities.

Besides the "exhausting but professionally stimulating" parts of the seminar, there was, as always, also plenty of fun at the end of the research days - with sunshine, a joint bicycle tour and a successful farewell dinner on the climate island Juist. We look back on an all-round successful seminar.
